The Soaring Society of America (SSA) acts as the “umbrella” organization for soaring in the United States, representing the collective interests of its individual, club, chapter, and business members. Fight operations are conducted by the various members in nearly every state, with some states having numerous sites available. The interactive “Where to Fly” tool on the SSA website will guide one to all member operating locations. There are two SSA member clubs operating in the Scott AFB local area, both welcome visitors, and provide introductory rides to interested parties. The St Louis Soaring Association (SLSA), owns, and operates out of, the Winet Airport in Highland IL, located about thirty miles east of St Louis on I-70 (immediately south of Exit 30). SLSA currently has two tow planes and eight sailplanes. More information can be found on the club’s website: www.stlsoar.org The Silvercreek Glider Club (SGC) owns, and operates out of, the Silvercreek Gliderport, located approximately 12 miles directly north of SLSA (I-55 to Exit 30, east on IL140 to the New Douglas/Rockford Rd). SGC has one tow plane, and three club sailplanes. More information can be found on the club’s website: www.silvercreekgliderport.com
